In this course, the Ph.D. students will get an introduction to the theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena. The course will focus on general fundamentals of the phase transitions, their nature, classification and description. Regarding the latter, most of the course will be devoted to the mean-field (MF) approximation, including van der Walls theory for fluids and Weiss theory of ferromagnetism, encapsulated by the phenomenological Landau theory. However, the scaling theory and renormalization group theory, both going beyond the MF theory, will also be briefly introduced.
