This course provides an introduction to pharmaceutical development and manufacturing and establishes a framework for understanding the pharmaceutical disciplines encountered throughout the curriculum. Using the drug product lifecycle as a unifying theme, the course introduces the stages from drug discovery and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) development through drug product development, manufacturing, quality control, regulatory approval, market introduction, and post-marketing surveillance. Particular emphasis is placed on API development, solid-state chemistry, preformulation, dosage form design, pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, quality systems, and regulatory affairs. A continuing case study follows the pathway of an innovative medicine and its generic counterparts. The course highlights the interconnections between pharmaceutical disciplines and their roles within the pharmaceutical industry.

The course is delivered through lectures combining theoretical instruction, discussion, and case study analysis. The course follows the lifecycle of a medicinal product from drug discovery to regulatory approval and post-marketing activities. Individual topics are illustrated using a continuous case study of an innovative medicinal product and its generic counterparts, enabling students to understand the relationships between pharmaceutical disciplines and their practical application in the pharmaceutical industry.
Teaching methods include:

Students are required to complete online quizzes released through the e-learning system during the semester and to take a final integrative test. A total of 12 quizzes are offered throughout the course. The 10 highest-scoring quiz results are included in the final assessment, while the two lowest scores are discarded.
The final integrative test evaluates students' understanding of the main stages of the medicinal product lifecycle, the relationships between pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, quality and regulatory activities, and the differences between the development of innovative and generic medicinal products.
The final grade is based on the total number of points obtained from the continuous quizzes and the final integrative test. To pass the course, students must achieve the minimum number of points specified by the instructor. Last update: Zámostný Petr (14.09.2026)
