Microorganisms are found in all ecosystems, they represent the largest proportion of biomass on Earth. They have the properties, for which they are used in biotechnological processes. Knowledge of the cellular architecture and physiology and also all factors affecting their growth and reproduction is essential for their application. The object of the course is to introduce the possibility resulting in fixing (strengthening) of the used (biosynthesis, biodegradation, biotransformation) characteristics of the microorganism.

Attendance at lectures is encouraged but not monitored.
Consultation is available to students on request. An integral part of the course is an e-learning course divided into blocks, within which students are provided with learning support, including electronic textbooks, presentations, lectures and other supplementary materials.

Students are introduced to new material through lectures. Students are also encouraged to discuss topics and actively ask questions. Real examples of the behaviour of microorganisms in different environments are presented, as well as the reasons for such behaviour and the possibilities of adaptation according to the requirements of the type of product - metabolic product, cell biomass... An expert from a biotechnology company will be invited to some of the lectures to ensure a better link with practice. Last update: Jarošová Irena (31.03.2025)

Oral exam The student will be given 5-7 questions on the topic to answer. Some questions are simply explanations of concepts, others are designed to require more verbal engagement from the student. The exam takes 15-20 minutes to complete. The student registers directly for the exam on the dates and at the times listed. Last update: Jarošová Irena (16.05.2025)

Students will be able to: Participate in the preparation of a technological process with regard to the physiological properties of the microorganism used. They will acquire knowledge that will enable them to work in both traditional and emerging areas of biotechnology. They will also be able to apply their knowledge of cell physiology in a subsequent Master's programme. They will be able to find appropriate information on management systems for the quality and safety of food and pharmaceutical products. Last update: Jarošová Irena (28.03.2025)
