Department of Physics and Measurements provides the education in the branch Chemical sensors. The lectures are provided in English language. Basic principles of the sensors and their tranducing mechanisms are explained on the practical demonstrations. Students obtain written materials with the text of lectures for their annotations and study. The obligatory part of the subject is presence in laboratory works.

1. Classification of sensors; transducing mechanisms; basic terminology of sensors 2. Overview of detection mechanisms in chemical gas sensors 3. An introduction to physics of semiconductors (intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductor, p-n junction, Schottky junction, surface states) 4. Semiconductor gas sensor - detection mechanisms in dependence on operation temperature 5. Architecture of semiconductor gas sensors 6. Basic materials of sensitive layers, their properties and selection 7. Catalysts and dopants in sensitive layers, mechanisms of their function; selective membranes 8. Nanostructured sensitive layers 9. Sensor parameters and possibilities of their improvement 10. Modes of sensor operation and measurement (dc- and ac- sensitivity, Nyquist diagrams, equivalent circuit parameters) 11. Interferent species, inhibitors and catalytic poisons 12. Sensor arrays, electronic nose, methods of data processing (Principal Component Analysis, cluster analysis) 13. Commercially produced semiconductor gas sensors and their application 14. Contemporary trends in semiconductor gas sensors |
