The course includes a concise review of fundamental concepts of molecular vibrations, infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, the consequences of molecular symmetry are discussed. The interpretation of the spectra of both inorganic and organic solid materials is related to the specific aspects of crystal symmetry. Advanced and emerging instrumental approaches are introduced including analysis of microobjects (microspectroscopy) and nanoobjects (techniques based on scanning probes, e.g. AFM-IR, SNIM). An obligatory part of the course is the preparation of individual Ph.D. student projects and their presentation on a workshop.

Students will be able to:

Select an appropriate technique of vibrational spectroscopy according to properties of analysed system and required analytical information.

Interpret spectra of both organic and inorganic substances using the information on molecular symmetry, point group character tables and other available reference data.

Describe special methods of vibrational spectroscopy including time-resolved techniques, surface-enhanced phenomena, nonlinear effects and specific properties in nanoscale.
