In working groups (usually of three), students get to know the basic operations and apparatus used in chemical and food industry. The task of the group is to carry out the prescribed measurements, process the experimental data and draw up a written protocol about the measurement process and its results. The protocol also contains the conclusions.
Aim of the course
Last update: Valenz Lukáš Ing. Ph.D. (18.11.2022)

Students will be able to:

control real chemical-engineering apparatus in practice,

basic principles of regulation and measurement of basic physical quantities,

process experimental data and

interpret the results.

Literature

Syllabus
Last update: Valenz Lukáš Ing. Ph.D. (18.11.2022)

Each group of students completes six of the tasks listed below.

Thematic areas of work:

Hydromechanical operations: Mechanical energy losses during fluid flow through pipes and fittings, Centrifugal pump characteristics, Agitator power consumption, Pressure drop in packed beds.

Thermal processes: Determination of the overall heat transfer coefficient in a plate or finned heat exchanger.

Separation processes: Filtration, Sedimentation, Fluidization, Reverse osmosis, Extraction.

Reactor engineering: Batch reactor with enzymatic reaction.

Registration requirements
Last update: Valenz Lukáš Ing. Ph.D. (18.11.2022)

Basic knowledge of unit operations (subject Chemical engineering I).

Course completion requirements
Last update: Valenz Lukáš Ing. Ph.D. (18.11.2022)

Students have to participate in six laboratory tasks, prepare a report from each task and defend the conclusions. For each piece of work, students will receive three grades (examination before the work, from the protocol, examination after the work from the protocol and the relevant theory) and none of them may be "F". The final mark is determined as the arithmetic mean of 18 marks.
