The course objective is an overview of production of drinking water from underground and surface raw water. Fundamental processes of water treatment plant including special technologies of water treatment are discussed. The course deals with both particular technological parts and the overall technological treatment train. Attention is also paid to produced waste management and its processing, it means separation and thickening of suspension and sludge. News in the field is also discussed and students gain both theoretical and practical knowledge in the area of contemporary drinking water treatment.
Aim of the course -

Students will be able to understand principles and design processes and used technologies for undergroud and surface water treatment. They can design the technological train of drinking water treatment plant, respecting the character and quality of raw water resource. They will understand deeply the principles of drinking water supply and treatment facility.

The introductory part of the course focuses on the quality of drinking water and possible pollutants in raw water. In addition, new approaches to solving calcium carbonate equilibrium, aggressive water properties, removal of carbon dioxide, iron, and manganese are discussed. Special ways of treatments (removal of radionuclides, xenobiotics and nitrogenous substances) are mentioned. Advanced coagulation is introduced. Furthermore, the formation and separation of suspensions and sludges and their processing are discussed. Water filters are presented, including their new arrangements and the usage of new filter materials. There are made remarks and analyses on the use of adsorption, especially on activated carbon. An important role plays disinfection of drinking water.
