The course introduces students to key urban structures and systems that affect the sustainability of cities and settlement in general. It is the crucial introduction to understanding the key role of cities for sustainable development. It emphasizes and describes a holistic approach to settlement planning and management.

1) Introduction, key terms and definitions: settlement, city, agglomeration, conurbation, metropolitan area, urbanized area, settlement system, population density, urban growth: size and importance differentiation of cities, FUA, horizontal and vertical geographical position, city vs. countryside, rural settlement, periphery.

2) Historical development of cities till the industrial revolution - geographical, economic, cultural, technological and other aspects of the ancient, medieval and early modern settlement structures.

3) Urban development since the industrial revolution till the 20th century. Key technological and cultural innovations. Urbanization process (theory, urbanization), suburbanization, industrialization, agglomeration, deurbanization, deindustrialization.

4) Todays cities and urbanized areas, gentrification, the phenomenon of tourism, the role of globalization and information technology. The main world and national metropolitan areas. Environmental, economic and social sustainability of cities, sustainability indicators.

5) Sociology and demography of the city, social structure, behavior, urban lifestyle, competitiveness and creativity, employment.

6) Urbanism and urban structure of the city. Description of various historical and ideological approaches to urbanism.

7) Sustainable transport and mobility, public and individual transportation, accessibility, transport modes, modal split, urban transport planning, parking issue,…

8) Sustainable social infrastructure, health, education and culture. Sustainable and social housing. The impact of the environment on the health of the population.

9) Environmental and energy sustainability of cities. Green and water (blue) infrastructure from the point of view of settlement sustainability. Waste management. Climate protection in the city, urban heat islands.

10) Economic sustainability of the city. Operating costs, investment funds, public and private capital.

11) Urban design and architecture of public spaces, shared vs. private space, physical permeability of cities, green infrastructure, visual communication and perception of the urban environment

12) Architecture of settlements in the Czech Republic. Sustainable construction. Examples of good practice.

13) Architecture of settlements in the world. Architecture in smart cities concept. Examples of good practice.

Credit will be awarded on the basis of attendance and active participation in seminars and the elaboration and defence of a semester work on an individually assigned topic. The course will end with an oral exam.
