The course Organic Chemistry of Selected Elements is targeted on properties, preparation and reactions of organic compounds bearing non-transition elements as boron, fluorine, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur etc. Organoboron compounds are highly sensitive to steric hindrance a display often low stability. Hydroboration, carbonyl group reduction, boron homologation and reactions with carbon monoxide belong to their most significant reactions. Organofluorine compounds display strikingly different properties depending by the substitution with one fluorine atom, trifluormethyl or perfluoroalkyl group. Organosilicon compounds are often employed as protective groups and their oxygen derivatives have high industrial impact (silicon oils, rubbers). Organophosphorus, organosulfur and organoselenium compounds are employed in organic synthesis (Wittig, Horner, Mitsunobu, Julia reactions, epoxide synthesis etc.). Attention is also paid to structures and reaction mechanisms of both hard (organolithium, organomagnesium), and soft (organocuprates) organometallic compounds.
