Annotation -
The course focuses on understanding the processing and use of coal and gaseous fuel. The course is generally divided into two teaching blocks. In the first part, students are given information regarding the origin and exploitation of coal and its subsequent use in technological processes such as gasification, liquefaction and coking. The understanding of such processes is improved by the teaching block devoted to basic analysis of lignite coal. The last part of the first block is dedicated to the capture and storage of CO2 produced during combustion of fossil fuels. In the second block, students receive basic information on properties of gaseous fuel and their utilization. Great emphasis is given on the use of natural gas as an energy carrier and resource for chemical synthesis. At the end of the second lecture block students are familiar with gaseous biofuels such as biogas or biomethane and using hydrogen in fuel cells.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Understand the principle of coal and natural gas formation.

Evaluate the basic parameters of solid and gaseous fuels.

Assess the technical parameters of a coal in industrial applications.

Select appropriate technology for the chemical processing of natural gas with respect to the required final product.

To understand the problems of fossil fuels and biofuels.
