Annotation -
Lectured methods include both classical chemical as well as instrumental techniques. The electrochemical analysis (potentiometry, voltammetry, polarography, coulometry), separation methods (gas and liquid chromatography, electrophoresis) and atomic and molecular spectroscopy (atomic absorption and/or emission spectroscopy, infrared, visible and UV absorption spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry) are lectured. Separate lecture is devoted to mass spectrometry and another one to quality assurance procedures in analytical chemistry. The seminars are focused on gravimetric and titration calculations, calculation of equilibria, using of Nernst and/or Lambert-Beers Law and evaluation of basic characteristics of separation processes. The Analytical chemistry I is followed by Analytical chemistry II in next semester, which is application oriented.

Aim of the course -

The aim of Analytical chemistry I is for studentto learn student analytical chemistry of basic level. Such student shall be able to specify his or her needs when communicating with analytical chemists or shall be able to perform analysis after enhancement of his/her knowledge of specific analytical technique.

Teaching methods -

Every week there is a two hour lecture and two hour seminar. The lectures are concerned about principles, methods and theory. The seminars include practical calculations of titration and gravimetric stoichiometry and pH, complex stability, Nernst and Lambert-Beers Law and evaluation of basic characteristics of separation processes important for analytical chemistry.

Requirements to the exam -

Valid rules for summer term 2019/2020

1. Two Continuous Credit tests (50 min.) are written during the semester, first one in the 8th and the second one in the 13th week of the semester. The tests are written at other time and place than the seminar, it is necessary to apply for the term in Student Information System (SIS). Each test is graded out of 100 points, maximum total score of the two tests being 200 points. In order to obtain the Credit, it is necessary to score at least 100 points in the total and also to score at least 25 points in each Continuous test.

It is possible to gain bonus points in the Continuous Credit tests that are added to the score of the regular Examination test (but not to the reparative Examination test):

(total score of the two Continous tests - 100) / 10 to be round up to integer number = number of bonus point

E.g. total score up to 104 points = no bonus point, total score 105-114 points = 1 bonus point, total score 195-200 points = 10 bonus points.

Fail or absence on the Continous Credit Test may be redeemed through the Comprehensive Credit test (100 min.) which combines the thematics of the two Continuous Credit tests. The maximum score of the Comprehensive Credit test is 200 points, it is necessary to score at least 100 points and also at least 25 points in each of the two parts (corresponding to Continuous Tests) to obtain the Credit. Three terms for the Comprehensive Credit test are offered during the examination period. Student can use only two of these terms.

2. Students, who study in Czech, pass credit test in Czech. Students, who study in English, pass credit test in English.

3. Students prove their identity with a suitable identity document containing at least the name and current photo.

4. The students sign in for Comprehensive credit test using SIS and it is duty of student to sign in for the term listed here. Signing off is possible up to date listed in SIS. Later it is possible only by request to secretary of department and only because of serious reasons. The test is failed when the student is absent and not signed off.

5. The assistant can allow writing test (both Comprehensive or Continous) when student arrive late. The missed time is not compensated.

6. It is not allowed to leave room during test. It is not allowed to use forbidden materials and tools including telecommunication tools.

7. The results of the Comprehensive test will be available on place and in time, which will be announced at the beginning of the test.

8. The Credits are written into the Index by assistant teaching seminars in time, which will be announced. Exceptionally it is possible to agree other time.

9. You can check your test at assistant teaching seminars in time and on place, which he or she assigns.

10. The examination is written and takes 100 min.

11. Students, who study in Czech, pass examination in Czech. Students, who study in English, pass examination in English.

13. The students register for the examination using SIS and it is duty of student to sign in for the term listed here. Signing off is possible up to date listed in SIS. Later it is possible only by request to secretary of department and only because of serious reasons. The examination is classified "F" when the student is absent and not signed off.

14. The assistant can allow writing examination when student arrives late. The missed time is not compensated.

15. It is not allowed to leave room during examination. It is not allowed to use forbidden materials and tools including telecommunication tools.

16. The place and the time will be announced during the examination. The examiner assign where and when will be possible to see checked examination test. If the student is not present in this time he or she resigns for any complain and agree with results. When student do not agree with classification of any of parts of test, the examiner will provide one, exceptionally more, additional question which will be answered in written form. According to result of these additional questions the examiner can change overall classification of examination by one step up or down.

17. Student can use only two reparative terms.

The student needs to know both inorganic and organic chemistry nomenclature, physical principles (magnetism, electromagnetic radiation etc.) and mathematics (polynomials). Sound knowledge in computing with logarithms and percents is essential.
