Annotation -
The course Analytical Chemistry II further develops the basic overview of the analytical chemistry concepts offered in the course Analytical Chemistry I. The focus of the more advance Analytical Chemistry II is on understanding the principles of modern techniques of instrumental chemical analysis. The course consists of lectures that provide the theoretical background of the modern analytical methods and seminars that are focused on the uncertainty and statistical aspects of the quantitative analysis (first half of the semestr) and on the understanding of structural analysis data (second half of the semestr). This includes interpretation of spectra obtained by the three major structural techniques in organic analysis: infrared spectrometry (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry, and electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS).

K udělení zápočtu je nutné získat ze dvou zápočtových testů celkově 100 bodů, přičemž z každého alespoň 25 bodů. Pro splnění ústní zkoušky je třeba získat alespoň 50 bodů ze zkouškového testu. Další podrobnosti jsou uvedeny v části "Požadavky ke kontorla studia".

Teaching methods -

The course offers two-hour lecture and one-hour seminar every week. The lectures discuss principles of the methods and the underlining theory. The seminars are focused on statistical calculations and interpretation of spectra using practical examples. The seminars are held in computer laboratory.

Requirements to the exam -

1. Credit test is written during seminars in the 7th and 14th week. To get credits, a student has to obtain 50 % of the sum of the tests and 25 % of each test.

2. Students, who study in Czech, pass credit test in Czech. Students, who study in English, pass credit test in English.

3. It is necessary to provide a valid UCT-issued student ID prior the test. If justified, UCT ID can be substituted by other valid picture ID (e.g. government or passport) with a recent photograph.

4. Students register for a test using SIS (Educational Info System) and it is the duty of each student to sign in for the term listed there. Signing off is possible up to date listed in SIS. Later, it is possible only by request to the secretary of the department and only because of serious reasons. The test is failed when a student is absent and not signed off.

5. The assistant can allow writing the test when students arrive late. The missed time is not compensated.

6. It is not allowed to leave the room during the test. It is not allowed to use forbidden materials and other tools including telecommunication electronics.

7. Results of the test will be available in place and at the time, which will be announced at the beginning of the test.

8. The credits are written into the Index by the the assistant teaching seminars at the appointed time, which will be announced. Exceptionally, it is possible to arrange other time.

9. You can check your test at the assistant teaching seminars in place and at the time, which he or she assigns.

10. The examination is written and takes 50 min. It consists of ten questions. Examiner is allowed to ask further questions.

11. If some of the topics will not be given because of a holiday or a rector’s day, this is not a reason for exclusion of these topics from the examination test.

12. Students, who study in Czech, pass the examination in Czech. Students, who study in English, pass the examination in English.

13. Student has duty to present the Index with written credits during the examination, otherwise, it is impossible to start/continue the exam.

14. The students sign in for the examination using SIS and it is the duty of a student to sign in for the term listed here. Signing off is possible up to date listed in SIS. Later it is possible only by request to the secretary of the department and only because of serious reasons. The examination is classified „F“ when the student is absent and not signed off.

15. The assistant can allow writing examination when students arrive late. The missed time is not compensated.

17. The place and the time will be announced during the examination. The examiner assigns where and when will be possible to see checked examination test. If the student is not present in this time he or she resigns for any complaint and agree with the final classification. When the student does not agree with the classification of any of parts of the test, the examiner will provide one, exceptionally, more additional questions which will be answered in written form. According to the result of these additional questions the examiner can change overall classification.

18. Students can use only two reparative terms.

The goal of Analytical chemistry II is to provide

  • orientation in modern methods of instrumental chemical analysis and basic overview of their fundamental background
  • ability to evaluate quality and reliability of analytical results using statistical techniques
  • ability to solve problems of structural chemical analysis
  • skills to interpret real-life examples of simple spectra obtained by infrared spectrometry (IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) spectrometry and electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI-MS)

Entry requirements -

Students who according to the study plan must complete the course of Analytical chemistry I (N402002 or N402002A) must register the subject of Analytical chemistry I as an educational duty in the index and they must pass the exam before the exam in Analytical chemistry II (N402004 or N402004A).
