The course is focused to the use of software simulators (Aspen Hysys) for calculations of refinery and petrochemical processes. It includes an introduction to engineering simulations and exercises aimed to specific operations and stream properties in petroleum processing. The course is held as a workshop, with a final project solved by students.

First part of the course includes the introduction of simulation software in the field of refinery processes and the fuel processing industry. Simulation software features are discussed in context of various phases of process and optimization. Second part of the course is devoted to the practical use of simulator for solving elementary chemical engineering problems. The last part of the course is aimed at the solution of the project based on selected technological process. Students will pass individual phases of the project, from the assignment, through the acquisition and verification of the necessary input data, the design of the process scheme or its variants, simplifications, or the process modification in order to increase the capacity or quality of products. Students will be able to use modern software tools for modeling and simulation of technological processes in order to evaluate the influence of process parameters on product yields and quality, and other variables, or for optimization of selected process parameters. As part of the project, students will learn how to model a simple process unit, acquire and validate input data, choose the appropriate computational methods, and use the model to solve technological problems or optimization tasks.
