Annotation -
The course provides information about surface treatment of ceramics, deals with various types (plastic decors, glaze, engobe, luster, metal compound, soldering ceramics, etc.), including raw materials, method of application and the heat treatment. Provides a description of their properties (chemical and mechanical resistance, etc.) and characterization of glaze-ceramic body system.

1. Introduction - history of use of surface treatments in ceramic manufacture

2. Basic classification of of surface treatments (glazes and engobes etc.), coloring of chemical compounds

3. Historical and contemporary raw materials for the preparation of glazes, engobes and pigments

4. Processes related to glazing, properties of glazes

5. Glaze composition calculations, selection of appropriate glazes and engobes

6. Colorless glazes - low-melting, high-melting

7. Color glazes - types of colors and pigments

8. Preparation technology of ceramic colors

9. Preparation of glazes, special glazes - art colors, crystalline colors etc.

10. Types of ceramic decoration I - overglaze, underglaze, majolica colors

11. Types of ceramic decoration II - salts, lusters, gold and silver compounds, engobes

12. Decoration techniques - plastic, color printing, steel printing, etching, silk-screen printing, rotocolor etc.

13. Glaze defects and colors, defectoscopy

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

  • characterize the different types of surface treatment of various materials, from ceramic stoneware pottery over to china and technical ceramics,
  • describe the technological processes of various types of surface treatment especially frits, glazes and engobes including pigments and luster, to describe processes that take place in their production,
  • explain the principle of coloring of glazes by pigments, know the ways of decorating,
  • apply knowledge of the properties of surface layers in the preparation of stable glaze - ceramic body system.
