Annotation -
The subjects of this course are biotechnology of production of biogas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide) and biohydrogen. Biogas is a renewable energy source. The benefit of the technology is biogas production from biodegradable waste materials, possibly purposefully grown biomass. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of the formation, properties and utilization of biogas. The information of the biogas production technology, design and equipment of biogas plants for different types of substrates will be used for the individual theoretical project of some biogas plant according to real data.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

  • Understand principles of anaerobic fermentation and factors influencing it
  • Characterize the substrates suitable for biogas production in anaerobic fermentors, both in terms of degradability, possibility of utilization and influence of our and EU legislation
  • Assess the suitability of individual substrates for use in specific anaerobic technologies (anaerobic reactors for wastewater treatment plants, biogas plants)
  • based on individual input data type design the technological line of biogas plants and calculate technological parameters and biogas production
  • understand the problems of biohydrogen production
