Polysaccharides are natural biopolymers that are widely used in pharmaceutical industry. Polysaccharides, their derivatives and oligomers do not have only complementary functions in drug forms, but also may be directly involved into the medicinal effects of pharmaceutical preparations. In the frame of subject course students will be introduced to structure and physical properties of medicinally important polysaccharides and their oligomers. Then the physical and chemical properties of polysaccharides, preparation of biologically active derivatives and oligosaccharides will be described. A substantial part of the course is devoted to applications and biological significance of polysaccharides in medicaments and other pharmaceutical preparations.
