Syllabus -

The subject covers following topics:

  • General terms: formal oxidation state, 18-electron rule, bonding in organometallic compounds

  • Classification and properties of ligands: halides, oxygen and nitrogen ligands, phosphines, hydrides, alkyls, alkenyls, s-aryls, acyl and NHC ligands.

  • Reactions of coordinated alkenes, arenes and polyenes with nucleophiles.

  • Alkenes and alkynes in transition metal catalyzed reactions: hydrogenation, hydrosylilation, hydroboration, hydrometallation, hydrocarbonylation, transition metal-catalyzed polymerization.

  • Cross-coupling reactions: general terms and introduction, an application of activated C-O, C-N, and C-S bonds in cross-coupling reactions, an influence of additives on reaction outcomes, Buchwald-Hartwig reaction.

  • Activation of C-H and C-C bond: the mechanisms and practical applications.

  • Transition metal-catalyzed multicomponent reactions: general terms, examples of multicomponent reactions.

  • Fischer and Schrock carbene complexes: properties and applications in organic synthesis (metathesis reactions)

  • Transition metal-catalyzed substitution of allylic substrates, the mechanisms and practical applications, asymetric allylic substitution.
