Annotation -
New findings regarding quantities and units under the ISO and IUPAC documents. Changes in the water due to sorption processes occurring on solid phases, their prediction and use in technological processes. The importance of oxidation-reduction potential and its usefulness in assessing the aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic conditions. The importance of photochemical processes in the transformation of the chemical composition of natural waters. Nanoparticles of various solid phases affecting the chemical composition of formation waters and technological processes of purification. Buffering and neutralizing capacity of different kinds of plants and their importance in water chemistry and water technology. Various methods of preservation of water samples depends on the analyte. The new persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and drugs and substances used for personal care products (PPCP) occurring in the waters and the principles of analytical determination. The subject can be adapted to the specific research focus of the doctoral work.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

assess the quality of the water in terms of its impact for the environment;

assess the quality of the water in terms of its aggressive action on various materials;

assess water quality in terms of hygiene;

explain the behavior of water on the basis of solutions of chemical and biochemical processes in different types of water.

Syllabus -

Natural and synthetic adsorbents, adsorption processes affecting the chemical composition of water. Soil sorption complex, formation of groundwater composition.

Bioaccumulation of xenobiotics in biomass; hydrochemical aspects of phytoremediation.

Water for irrigation of plants - composition depending on the way of irrigation water, risk groups of substances.

Changes in the composition of natural waters during drought. Gentle water management and water retention in the landscape.

Special modeling using computational programs, eg Geochemist's Workbench. Use in solving chemical equilibria, simulating contamination of groundwater in a disaster, etc.

Solubility and solubility of gases in water, degree of saturation.

Persistent organic pollutants in waters and restrictive measures under the Stockholm Convention (2011). The occurrence of drugs in sewage, the efficiency of removal in sewage processes, residues in effluent from WWTPs.

Personal hygiene drugs and preparations (PPCPs) - Contamination of different types of water, removal efficiency in sewage treatment and water treatment.

Application of photochemical processes in self-cleaning in natural waters.

Nanoparticles significant in water chemical formation and decontamination.

Substances which may leach from plastic containers; the possibilities of their analytical determination and elimination. Pollution of water microplastics, analytical determination of microplastics.
