Annotation -
Students will learn basic principles of green and sustainable chemistry. Special attention is paid both to introduction of general concepts, such as the use of alternative solvents, non-traditional energy sources (microwave radiation, ultrasound), process intensification, and to demonstration of the use of green chemistry in industrial practice. This includes use of selective oxidants, solid acid and base catalysts, upgrading of biomass to afford high added value products and advanced biofuels. Introduced are also the concepts of biorefineries and platform chemicals.

Students will learn:

General concepts of green chemistry

Alternative reaction media and possibilities of the intensification of chemical processes

Possibilities of biomass utilization for production of fine chemicals

Current trends in biomass utilization as an alternative to petrochemical processes

Course completion requirements -

The student has to obtain at least 50 points out of 100 possible in the written part of the exam to conclude successfully the studies. In the oral part of the exam, the student will, if necessary, explain and amend his/her answers given in the written part of the exam.
