The course Electrochemical Technologies deals with the use of electrochemical processes for the preparation of primarily inorganic elements and compounds. In general there are processes taking place at the interface between the electrode - electrolyte with the conversion of electrical energy into chemical.
Electrochemical processes utilizing mainly the cathodic reduction of electrode reaction
encountered as in preparation of the alkali metal amalgam in mercury production process of the alkali hydroxides, the electrochemical production of hydrogen, or electroplating excretion of metals and alloys and electrochemical production of metals.
Electrochemical processes utilizing mainly anodic oxidation electrode reactions are the basis for the electrochemical production of chlorine, electrolytic production of potassium permanganate, or electrochemical refining of metals.
The course is also focused attention on electromembrane processes for separation of ions in solution. Separation of ions may precede the cathodic or anodic reaction, such as in a membrane electrolysis of sodium chloride to obtain chlorine and sodium hydroxide, or in membrane fuel cell.
Electrothermal processes involve technological processes in which the power used to achieve the high temperatures needed to carry out chemical reactions, e.g. in the preparation of white phosphorus, as a raw material for the production of thermal phosphoric acid.
Individual processes are analyzed in terms of chemical engineering, technological and also in terms of environmental protection, as conditions conversion of mercury production process chlorine and sodium hydroxide to modern membrane process.
