Annotation -
The aim of this course is to explain the principles of toxicity testing mainly as a tool for determination of effects of chemical compounds present in the environment and their impact on different biological species and ecosystem balance. Besides chemical analysis, estimation of ecotoxicity of chemical compounds is an important part of environmental monitoring. Broad spectrum of toxicity tests and their application in waste management or environemntal protection is demonstrated. The student will be guided through the whole process of toxicity testing from sample collection, planning of experimental design to final data interpretation.

Course completion requirements -

We recommend to complete the e-learning exercises before the exam. "Comprehensive Assignment No. 13" must be completed no later than 7 days before the scheduled exam. Otherwise, there is a risk that the lecturer will not have enough time for corrections. However, any practice in e-learning is optional and does not affect the outcome of the final exam.

Teaching methods -

Lecture: Students participate in a live lecture by the teacher.

Discussion: During the lessons, interesting or unclear questions are discussed.

Interaction: Students are actively engaged during lectures through quizzes.

Home preparation: Students prepare independently before class using short instructional videos and presentations.

Practicing and consultation: In e-learning, students practice the material they have learned with examples and consult the results with the teacher..

Requirements to the exam -

Exam requirements:

The exam consists of a written part, where the student must score at least 50 points out of 100. The written exam includes test questions (5%), explanation of terms (20%), open questions (40%), solving (eco)toxicology case studies (35%)

100 - 91 points - A, 90 - 81 points - B, 80 - 71 points - C, 70 - 61 points - D, 60 - 50 points - E, 49 - 0 points - F

If the student passes the test (at least 50%), he/she can take the oral part of the exam. In the oral part of the examination, a maximum of two grades may be added to the test grade in the event of an excellent performance. In the event of failure in the oral part of the examination, the mark obtained in the test will not be reduced but will be retained. The oral part is optional for capacity reasons.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

  • Explain the link between mutagenesis and carcinogenesis at the cellular level and critically assess the informative value and limitations of individual genotoxicity tests (e.g., proper interpretation of a negative test result).
  • Differentiate between the specific requirements of testing pure chemical substances versus complex environmental matrices (e.g., mixtures, contaminated soil, wastewater) and select the appropriate sample preparation method (direct solid-phase testing, leaching, or extraction).
  • Describe the methodological design of standard ecotoxicological tests, specify their limitations (e.g., sterility requirements, temporal and spatial scales), and justify the selection of test organisms.
  • Interpret dose-response curves and determine standard ecotoxicological toxicity indices (EC50, NOEC, LOEC).
  • Design and justify an appropriate battery of toxicity tests for the environmental risk assessment of specific sample types or pollutants.
