Annotation -
Students will obtain theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemical laboratory techniques, which are commonly used in research work. They will manage basic operations necessary for further routine work in biochemical laboratory. They will try wide spectrum of biochemical techniques, particularly in the area of biomolecules isolation and analysis of biological samples.

The prerequisite for obtaining credit is the preparation of protocols for laboratory work in the required quality, 100% participation in practicals and passing the final test.

Teaching methods -

Laboratory exercises include practice of basic laboratory techniques, calculations and preparation of lab reports.

Independent supervised work in groups of two to three students. Students complete practical problems using manual with instructions for each problem.

Requirements to the exam -

Requirements for successful completion of the course:

  • 100% participation in all laboratory tasks
  • completion of all lab reports
  • successful completion of the final exam

The maximum number of points from the final exam is 100, the minimum number of points for achieving a graded credit is 50. The overall course grade is composed of the grade from the exam and the average grade from the protocols (50%/50%).

8. Separation of lysosyme from egg white (albumen) by ion-exchange chromatography

9. Study of enzyme properties of trypsin using chromogenic substrate

10. Immobilisation of yeasts to alginate gel

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

use various modern biochemical techniques, which are used in current research. They will learn to use basic biochemical operations such as isolation of selected biomolecules, their quantitation, chromatographical and electrophoretical characterization,kinetic enzyme studies etc.

The acquired knowledge will be used by students during their work on bachelor and diploma thesis.
