Annotation -
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the methods and the principles of creation of systematic scientific paper, while allowing students to obtain adequate knowledge of technical programs and tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, graphic editing programs, etc.). The issue of citations is also discussed in detail especially in the technical literature. The course also provides a framework and rules for successful oral presentation of scientific work. All taught material is practiced during the class.

Create and technically write a Bachelor thesis

Create scientific documents using MS Word, MS Excel and other programs

Create a presentation and posters in MS Powerpoint

Correctly use citations in scientific work

Successfully present scientific results

Teaching methods -

The course is taught in computer classrooms, ICT Prague. Teaching is done through exercises that combine brief theoretical explanation for extensive solution of practical problems. Real problems are presented to the students and they have to solve them using MS Word, MS Excel. EndNote and other useful programs in order to successfully create bachelor and diploma theses. Another part of the course is devoted to creating presentations and posters in MS Powerpoint. This part of the course is linked with the basics of a successful presentation to professional and lay audiences.

1. Introduction, verification of existing knowledge by the test

2. Operating systems, work with Windows and files, archive managers, file backup, cloud storages, work with e-mail, passwords and file encryption

3. Basic principles and methods of making good scientific work (bachelor and master thesis, science articles), the issue of plagiarism

4. Programs in MS Office, Basic word processing in MS Word - styles, formatting

5. MS Word, automatic numbering, bullets, inserting objects, automatic links

6. MS Word, sections, automatic correspondence, advanced features

7. Sources of scientific informations, citation databases, citations in the technical literature - rules, ČSN ISO 690 technical standard, EndNote

8. MS Excel, basic functions, inserting functions, mathematical, logical and text functions, matrix operations

9. MS Excel, creating and inserting charts and graphs into technical literature, other scientific graphing and data analysis software

10. MS Excel, advanced features, processing of large data files, numerical solution of technical problems, macros

11. MS PowerPoint, basic and advanced features, design and layout of presentation

12. MS PowerPoint, creating posters, working with images and photos, preparation for printing

13. Principles of the successful oral presentation of scientific work, contact with audience, verbal and Nonverbal communication
