Only DSP students who have not completed the M215003 Petrochemistry course in Master's degree can register for this subject. The course introduces students to the production and use of the most high-tonnage chemicals which are produced mainly from petroleum fractions and natural gas. Graduates will gain an overview of the production and use of ethylene, propylene, buta-1,3-diene, benzene, toluene, xylenes, hydrogen, ammonia and other substances.

After completing the course, students will understand the raw material base for production of high-tonnage organic chemicals, will understand the production processes of high-tonnage organic chemicals and application of these chemicals in the production of various plastics, rubbers, resins, fibres, detergents and other important products.

The first block of the subject is devoted to the overview of raw materials and production of basic petrochemicals, i.e. ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene and xylenes. The second block of teaching is devoted to the use of these basic petrochemicals in the production of other large-scale chemicals used in the manufacture of various plastics, rubbers, resins, fibres, detergents and other important products. The third block deals with the production of hydrogen, synthesis gases (hydrogen + carbon monoxide) and the use of these gases in the production of hydrocarbons, ammonia and methanol, and the use of these chemicals. The fourth block is devoted to the production and use of surfactants, acetylene and naphthalene.
