Graduates will be familiar with the processes of thermal and catalytic cracking, hydrocracking and hydrotreating of petroleum fractions and residues, catalytic reforming and isomerization of gasoline fractions and production of gasoline compounds by alkylation and polymerization. They will know the chemistry of the reactions taking place in these processes, the catalysts used and their properties. They will know how to produce the individual products that the refinery sells and what their properties must be. They will also know the production processes and properties of the different types of biofuels that are used as transport fuels. |

The first part of the course deals with desalting, atmospheric and vacuum distillation of crude oil, processing of heavy oil fractions by means of individual processes of thermal and catalytic cracking and hydrocracking of high boiling petroleum fractions and residues. The second part is focused on the processes of refining of the individual fractions obtained from the above processes, production of hydrogen, isolation and processing of sulphane, reforming and isomerization of naphtha, production of gasoline fractions by alkylation and polymerization and production of ethers. The third part deals with the production and properties of base oils, combustion of fuels, properties and use of gaseous hydrocarbons, gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil, fuel oils, asphalts and fuels for marine engines. The complexity of refineries, emissions from oil processing and fuel filling stations are also under consideration. The fourth part is dedicated to the production processes and properties of the different types of biofuels used for propulsion of engines and the possibilities of production of fuels and other refinery products from alternative fossil fuels. |
