Annotation -
An applied branch presuming an elementary knowledge about hydrobiology (systematic summary and characteristic of cyanobacteria, algae, protozoans, metazoans), environmental ecology and saprobiology. Notably are solved the problems of eutrophication and classification of ecological state and potential of water with respect on suitable used biological elements of water quality (plankton, periphyton, benthos, macrophytes). The question of the water environment bioindication is solved, also ecological relations between water associations (phytoplankton) and application of knowledge to process of water treatment and waste water treatment technologies. Problems of HACCP and Water Safety Plans are discussed with regard to risk analyses in water treatment. Fundamental there is a practical part focused to the specific groups of microorganisms, their signification, means of detection and determination (microscopy, biochemical methods, molecular biology) and methods of ecological monitoring. Concept and content object of study is individually adapted with respect on experience and knowledge of aspirant and further is adjusted to the theme solved by dissertation thesis.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able independently monitor biotopes with the view of the ecological state examination, use acceptable methods of study and valuable biological elements of water quality. Will be able to elaborate the risk analyses and apply theoretical knowledge in practise (water and waste water treatment technologies).

Syllabus -

Preliminary part of study deal with summarization of fundamental knowledge relevant to hydrobiology of state and flowing waters, ecology and taxonomy od microorganisms, methods of their study (microscopy). Substantial part is sight on microscopic identification of microorganisms sampling from the various biotopes (water basins, pools, rivers, reservoir with different state of ecological loading) used for the ecological state classification of biotopes (eutrophication, acidification, etc.). Hydrobiological knowledge are applied into the water treatment and waste water treatment technologies, discussed are organoleptic problems, hygienic and safety water, secondary contamination, with respect to Water Safety Plans, new legislation and methods. Very important are procedures of realized biological audits.
