Biotechnological processes have become an integral part of the protection, environmentally friendly use and restoration of damaged environment. The course is focuses on the latest knowledge related to these processes. Notably the understanding of relationships in ecosystems adversely affected by human activities, and finding tools for restoration and stabilization of such ecosystems. These tools include microbiological and molecular biological methods in the development of biological agents of environmental technologies, engineering solutions and practical application of technological processes for environmental restoration and ecosystem monitoring.

Students will be able to comprehensively assess the condition of a particular ecosystem and then propose the right experimental approach to obtain relevant data for the development and implementation of bioremediation processes. Students will be able to compare the benefits and risks of different types of biotechnological interventions and to choose the optimal solution for the restoration of the damaged ecosystem. Furthermore, he will be able to control the selected bioprocess, monitor and critically evaluate its effectiveness. Last update: Pátková Vlasta (15.11.2018)

The course covers a wide range of biotechnological processes used to stabilize / recover different types of ecosystems. The first part focuses on the general principles applicable to all types of these processes. Attention is paid in particular to: a) understanding of the relationships between the biological and abiotic components of ecosystems, b) the utilization of different types of metabolism of organisms under different physicochemical conditions, c) the existence and development of metabolic pathways for the decomposition of important groups of xenobiotics, d) enhancing the biodegradation activity of current microorganisms and the development of new strains, e) mathematical models for the description of bioremediation processes. The second part is devoted to a comprehensive overview of individual bioremediation processes for the decontamination of various types of matrices (air, water, soil). According to each student's focus, case studies are discussed in detail. Besides technological solution is carried their assessment of the economic and legislative point of view.
