Annotation -
The course focuses on the practical mastery of the basic chemical calculations required to complete laboratory exercises. It covers calculations based on the stoichiometry of chemical reactions (quantities of reactants and products, different states of matter of reactants or products), expressing and converting the composition of mixtures, calculations relating to the concepts of saturated solutions and crystallisation, as well as calculations of conversion, yield and losses in chemical processes.

As part of the exercise, students work together to solve sample problems. Following a detailed analysis of the model solution, students solve further problems independently. They demonstrate their ability to solve problems independently through tests.

Syllabus -

1. Basic physical and chemical quantities. Units, dimensions, conversions. Calculations with inaccurate values.

2. Mixtures and expressing their composition; various ways of expressing composition and mutual conversions.

3. Composition of compounds; determining the stoichiometric formula from composition; mass fraction of an element in a mixture of compounds.

4. Preparation and separation of mixtures. Impurities, admixtures.

5. Assessment test I

6. Saturated solutions.

7. Free crystallisation, yield.

8. Discontinued crystallisation, losses.

9. Assessment test II

10.Fundamentals of stoichiometric calculations.

11.Simple stoichiometric calculations. Determining the excess of a component, yield, conversion, losses.

12.More complex stoichiometric calculations (sequential and parallel reactions, different states of matter of reactants/products).

13.Assessment test III

14.Marking of tests and revision.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

.- use and convert values of physical quantities in SI-based units,

.- express the composition of compounds and mixtures in various ways and perform conversions between them,

.- prepare solutions and adjust their composition,

.- carry out simple material balances (spontaneous and forced crystallisation)

.- stoichiometric calculations (calculating the quantities of reactants/products, composition of the reaction mixture), including the application of conversion, yield and losses
