The subject deals with methods of surface treatment leading to protection, conservation and formation of decorative layers and coatings on objects made of metals and alloys. The lectures are focused especially on processes in conservation and restoration of metallic cultural heritage objects. The methods of surface treatment involve making of metallic, inorganic non-metallic and organic non-metallic coatings and diffusion layers. Students are acquainted with characterizing of surface properties such as chemical and phase composition, structure, and mechanical and corrosion properties of surface layers and coatings.

Students will able to: Objectively evaluate necessary intervention and work maximally gently with respect to the historical artefact. Recognize incorect (dangerous) standard preservation-restoration procedures and prevent irreversible damage of the artefact. Transfer modern technologies into the preservation-restoration practice.
