Annotation -
The course provides information about surface treatment of ceramics, deals with various types (plastic decors, glaze, engobe, luster, metal compound, soldering ceramics, etc.), including raw materials, method of application and the heat treatment. Provides a description of their properties (chemical and mechanical resistance, etc.) and characterization of glaze-ceramic body system.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

  • characterize the different types of surface treatment of various materials, from ceramic stoneware pottery over to china and technical ceramics,
  • describe the technological processes of various types of surface treatment especially frits, glazes and engobes including pigments and luster, to describe processes that take place in their production,
  • explain the principle of coloring of glazes by pigments, know the ways of decorating,
  • apply knowledge of the properties of surface layers in the preparation of stable glaze - ceramic body system.
