Annotation -
Last update: Šír Marek Ing. Ph.D. (28.01.2018)
The aim of the subject is to provide knowledge about transport and fate of chemicals in the environment. The subject provides, in particular, information on the origin and the fate of chemical substances in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and pedosphere. A great deal of attention is paid to abiotic and biotic environmental reactions and equilibria. Learning outcomes and competences are that students will be able to get information on complex issues of chemical substances in all spheres of the environment and will provide information on current trends in environmental protection.
Aim of the course -
Last update: Šír Marek Ing. Ph.D. (28.01.2018)

Students will be able to:

To characterize the individual components of the environment, describe and explain the relationships between them

Interpret the fate of chemicals in the environment

Describe and explain problems associated with pollution of all spheres of the environment, discuss options for remedies

1. Introduction to environmental chemistry - abiotic and biotic components of the environment and their relationships, fate of chemicals in the environment

2. Basic facts about the hydrosphere, the circulation of water on earth

3. Pollution of water sources: problematic contaminants of surface and groundwater (toxic metals, persistent organic pollutants - drug residues, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, complexing agents, surfactants, etc.)

4. Pollution of water sources: acidification of water and its consequences (toxic metal remobilization, depletion of buffer capacity), influence of the oxygen system

5. Mechanisms for the removal of pollutants from the aquatic environment (sorption, stripping, precipitation, biodegradation, photodegradation)

6. Introduction to geology and pedology, characteristics of the soil environment, soil-forming processes, soil composition and properties

7. Physical-chemical processes in soil, basics of hydrogeology, connection to biological processes

8. Selected types of contaminants - origin, characteristics and distribution in the environment

9. Biotransformation of chemical substances, types of biodegradation reactions, biotic environmental equilibrium

10. Atmosphere as dynamic system: chemical composition, physical parameters and principles of air flow

11. Water in the atmosphere: cloud formation, precipitation mechanism, liquid phase reaction, pure troposphere reaction: major reaction mechanisms, reactive particles and examples of the most important reactions

12. Anthropogenic emissions: overview of pollutants, their sources and impact on the environment, smog formation chemistry

13. Atmosphere as the radiation filter: stratospheric ozone chemistry, the planet's energy balance, and the greenhouse effect mechanism

14. Global issues related to environmental pollution
