Annotation -
As part of the lectures, students will learn about the principles of analytical methods that are commonly used in control and development analytical laboratories. The spectrum of methods discussed includes both classical analysis methods and instrumental methods, which make up the majority of the content of the subject. From instrumental techniques, students will learn about electrochemical methods (potentiometry, voltammetry, coulometry), separation methods (gas and liquid chromatography, electromigration methods) and atomic and molecular spectroscopy methods (atomic absorption and emission spectrometry, spectrometry in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet region of the spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry). A special lecture is devoted to mass spectrometry and to quality assurance procedures in analytical chemistry. The seminars are focused on gravimetric and titration stoichiometry calculations, equilibrium calculations, applications of Nernst's equation, Faraday's and Lambert-Beer's law and evaluation of basic characteristics of separation processes. Laboratory exercises are taught as a separate subject "Analytical Chemistry: Laboratory I". The subject "Analytical Chemistry I" is followed in the next semester by "Analytical Chemistry II", in which the principles discussed are further deepened, the spectrum of techniques discussed is greatly expanded and great attention is paid to the applications of individual methods.

Aim of the course -

The students will be introduced to the basics of analytical chemistry and will gain a basic overview of analytical techniques. The students will be able to specify their requirements in communication with analytical chemists or, after improving theoretical and practical knowledge of specific techniques, will be able to perform analyses.

Course completion requirements -

To obtain the credit it is necessary to obtain at least 100 points from credit tests (corresponds to 50% of the total score). To complete the written exam test it is necessary to obtain at least 50% of the total score from the test. See "Požadavky ke zkoušce" for more details.

Requirements to the exam -

Rules and requirements 2-14 (listed below) are common to both the winter and summer semesters.

RULES FOR THE WINTER SEMESTER:

1. Two continuous 50-minute credit tests are written in Analytical Chemistry I, the first one in the 8th week of the semester, the second one in the 14th week of the semester. Tests are written during exercise classes, unless otherwise is stated. Students do not have to register for these tests in the Study Information System (SIS). A maximum of 100 points can be obtained in both continuous tests, i.e. a total of 200 points. Credit will be awarded to students who obtain at least 100 points in total and at the same time obtain at least 25 points in each test.

RULES FOR THE SUMMER SEMESTER:

1. Two continuous 50-minute credit tests are written in Analytical Chemistry I, the first one in the 7th week of the semester, the second one in the 13th week of the semester. Tests are written outside of exercise classes and students have to sign up for these tests in SIS. A maximum of 100 points can be obtained in both continuous tests, i.e. a total of 200 points. Credit will be awarded to students who obtain at least 100 points in total and at the same time obtain at least 25 points in each test.

COMMON RULES FOR BOTH SEMESTERS:

2. Bonus points can be obtained from the continuous credit tests, which are added to the score of the regular exam date (no longer to the remedial exam dates) and whose calculation is as follows: (sum of points from the continuous credit tests - 100) / 10 and rounded to a whole number = number of bonus points, e.g. sum of 104 points = no bonus point, sum of 105-114 points = one bonus point, sum of 195-200 points = ten bonus points.

Fail or absence on the continuous credit tests can be remedied through the 100-minute comprehensive credit test which combines the thematics of the two continuous credit tests. A maximum of 200 points can be obtained in the comprehensive test, and in order to be awarded by the credit, it is necessary to obtain a total of at least 100 points and at the same time 25 points in each of the two parts (corresponding to the thematically continuous tests) of the comprehensive test. Bonus points are not awarded for the comprehensive test. In the SIS, three dates of the comprehensive credit test are listed during the exam period, and the student has the right to choose two of these dates.

3. The student signs up for the comprehensive credit test via SIS and it is the student's responsibility to register up to the deadline specified here. Deregistration from the test is possible until the date indicated in the SIS, later only through the guarantor of the subject Analytical Chemistry I or the secretary of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, and only for serious reasons. The test is failed when the student is absent and not signed off.

4. During the writing of the credit or exam test, the student will prove her/his identity with a suitable identity card containing at least her/his name, surname and current photograph.

5. The assistant can allow writing test (continuous, comprehensive or exam) when student arrive late. The missed time is not compensated.

6. It is not allowed to leave the room or use unauthorized aids (textbooks, notes, prepared questions, etc.), including communication devices (mobile phones, tablets, smart watches, smart glasses, headphones, etc.) during the writing of the credit or exam test.

7. The results of credit tests will be available in SIS at a time that will be announced at the start of the test.

8. A continuous or comprehensive credit test will be available for inspection at your assistant at a time and place determined by your assistant. At the same term, possible claims for scoring individual examples can be made. Point complaints are possible within 14 days from the date of writing the given credit test.

9. The Analytical Chemistry I exam is only written and lasts 100 minutes.

10. The student registers for the exam through SIS and it is the student's responsibility to register up to the deadline specified here. Deregistration from the exam is possible only up to the deadline indicated in the SIS, later only through the guarantor of the subject Analytical Chemistry I, or your lecturer or the secretary of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, and only for serious reasons. The exam test is graded "F" when the student is absent and not signed off.

11. The place and time of publication of the results of the exam test will be announced at the beginning of the test. The examiner will determine when and where the written tests will be available for viewing. If the student does not appear within this deadline, she/he waives the opportunity to view the evaluation (unless the examiner has agreed otherwise with the student). In case of disagreement with the assessment of a certain question, the examiner may give the student one, or exceptionally more, supplementary questions, which the student will answer in writing. Based on the assessment of these additional questions, the examiner is entitled to adjust the assessment by a maximum of one grade.

12. The student has the right to a maximum of two correction dates for successfully passing the exam.

13. Students with recognized specific needs (according to VŠCHT directive No. A/S/961/5/2018 or as amended) are required to notify at least 2 calendar days in advance that they wish to use the adjustment of study conditions on a future test. Everyone's situation will be dealt with individually. In this case, contact the guarantor of the subject Analytical Chemistry I by e-mail. The student must always apply again before each test/examination or attempt to adjust the study conditions.

14. Credit obtained in the previous semester is also recognized in the following semester. After the student registers the Analytical Chemistry I course for the current semester at the dean's office, she/he must have the credit rewritten for this current semester, starting from the third week of the semester with the secretary of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Mrs. Maršíčková (building A, door number 238).
