The course introduces students to fundamentals of glass, glass-ceramics and ceramics technology and to typical properties of these materials. It shows basic models of mechanisms and kinetics of interaction of glass and glass-ceramic materials with aqueous solutions and body fluids. The course also introduces students to principles of development of materials for medicine and pharmaceutical industry and to testing of their functional properties.
Aim of the course -

Students will be able to

describe basic steps and processes at manufacturing of glass, glass-ceramics and ceramics

choose suitable methods of characterization of chemical and phase composition of biomaterials and their surfaces and for testing their functional properties

use physico-chemical models for description of interaction of materials with human body environment and with liquid pharmaceuticals

design the treatment of materials in order to increase their biocompatibility, bioactivity or chemical durability
