Annotation -
Analytical methods for the determination of the main components of drinking, surface and waste waters are discussed. Included are both classical methods, i.e. titration, gravimetric and spectrophotometric, and modern instrumental methods such as AAS, ICP, chromatography. The choice of methods is based on current analytical practice and the principle, procedure of determination, possible sample pretreatment, elimination of interferences, the area of application of the method and calculation of analyte concentration are always explained. The course thus establishes the theoretical foundations necessary for mastering the Laboratory of Water Analysis. Emphasis is also placed on understanding and practicing the basic calculations used in the preparation of solutions, data evaluation and results processing.

Aim of the course -

Students will know the determination methodology of common components of drinking, surface and sewage water and they will know the principles of all determinations. Students will know the procedure of each hydroanalytic determination and they will be able to calculate the results from the measured values, including the correct interpretation of the obtained results.

Course completion requirements -

The course ends with a classified credit. The classification is based on the evaluation of the final test, which takes 90 minutes to write and no aids such as scripts, notes, tablet, notebook, etc. are allowed; only writing materials and a calculator are allowed. A maximum of 100 points can be obtained in the test, 70 for correctly answered questions and 30 for correctly calculated examples. The grading is based on the usual grading scale: 91-100 points A, 81-90 points B, 71-80 points C, 61-70 points D, 51-60 points E, 50 points or less F. There is one regular test date and two make-up dates, which can also be used to correct the grade. If you wish to make up a grade, you must inform the instructor to enter the grade of F in SIS, as this is the only way the system will allow you to register for the make-up term.

Requirements to the exam -

Students' knowledge and skills are tested in the form of a final test, which includes both closed and open questions from the theory and hydroanalytical calculations. The required range of knowledge corresponds to the syllabus of the course.

1. Mathematical processing of measured data in titration and spectrophotometric methods (including calibration)

2. Physico-chemical parameters: conductivity, pH. Application of ion-exchange in water analysis

3. Total inorganic parameters: total mineralisation, dissolved and suspended solids, ionic dissolved solids

4. Titration determination of neutralization capacity, calcium and magnesium

5. Titration determination of sulphates, chlorides

6. Spectrophotometric determination of ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, reactive phosphorus, boron and silicon

7. Determination of COD-Mn; spectrophotometric determination of iron; determination of manganese by titration colorimetry

8. Iodometric determination of dissolved oxygen; titrimetric and spectrophotometric determination of reactive chlorine
