Students will be introduced to the field of public health and epidemiology and its role in the healthcare and the disease prevention. At the biomedical level, students will learn about all factors influencing the organism in the environment and at the workplace. The course will focus on laboratory analysis of key risk markers from different components of environment and workplace, as well as beneficial factors of disease prevention.

Introduction – laboratory safety Toxicology of environment, important toxicological biomarkers, methods of detection, laboratory assays of selected markers, limits and their calculation, principles. Nutritional toxicology, important food contaminant, pesticides residues, veterinary drug residues, process contaminants, principles of their formation, effect on the organism, chronic toxicity, preventive healthcare. Drinking water in public health, packed drinking water, microbiological and chemical parameters of drinking water. VÚV T.G.M., microbiological and chemical laboratory – analytical methods. Drugs of abuse, smoking, drug addiction, diagnostics and markers, methods of detection, measurement of selected markers in biological material by non-invasive methods. Workplace, risk factors of individual components of workplace, health risk, prevention, limits. Measurement instuments for individual factors of the environment, calibration, operators, measurement of selected factors – measurement reporting. Students will be able to analyze various risk biomarkers from workplace, environment, water and food. They will be able to measure and analyze special analyses different from those done in clinical biochemistry laboratories or by automatic analyzers.
