Annotation -
Lab training introduces basic safety measures and practical habits for work in radiochemical laboratory. It practically demonstrates Geiger-Müller tube and within individual task students will familiarize with the determination of half-time decay of isotopes using the scintillation method, RIA or IRMA method, and applications in HPLC and TLC chromatography. It includes also an excursion to specialized workplaces for nuclear medicine.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Formulate basic practical safety measures and habits for work in radiochemical laboratory

Perform basic manipulations and determinations of radioactive isotopes

Apply radiochemical methods in other areas of analytical, organic and medicinal chemistry and biochemistry

1. Labor safety, written entry test of radiation hygiene, its evaluation, seminar

2. Purity of work test, contamination of a workplace, good laboratory habits in radiochemical laboratory

3. Working characterization and dead time of Geiger-Müller tube

4. Determination of half-time decay of potassium isotope 40

5. Synthesis of a deuterated compound using hydrogenation with deuterated gas or degalogenation

6. Determination of isotopologic composition using MS of deuterated compound prepared in provious task

7. Activity measurement using scintillation method

8. HPLC with radioactive detector

9. Radionuclides in genetic context - separation of maternal and daughter nuclide by extraction, yield assessment

10. Determination using RIA or IRMA method

11. Excursion to a workplace for synthesis of compounds for nuclear medicine 90mTc

12. Excursion to a workplace for synthesis of compounds for positron emission tomography

13. TLC of radioactive substances

14. Submission of protocols, seminar
