The course is focused on understanding the basics of safety at work (not only) in the chemical industry. That inappropriate change process at work can lead to an accident with serious consequences. They should know that some values ​​do not need to be calculated exactly. Even approximate result is often sufficient, showing whether or not ther is any sanger. This course does not turn the students in experts, but it provides them with basic knowledge and makes them aware that any change to production mana gement needs to be considered carefully, taking into account all aspects.

Calculate risks and hazard in manufacturing technology.

Evaluate the risks of storage and processing of flammable substances.

Estimated dangers in chemical operation.

Know the basics of safety and fire engineering.

1. Basic concepts and concepts of risk analysis, classification of dangerous substances, legislation, examples and analysis of major accidents in the chemical industry.

2. Basic Risk Assessment Methods: Dow Fire and Explosion Index, HAZOP, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

3. Classification of flammable substances, fire characteristics of flammable liquids - flash point, combustion point, auto-ignition temperature.

4. Chemical explosions, explosion limits and their determination, flammability diagram, TNT equivalent, dust explosions.

5. Leakage of substances from containers - speed / time of discharge of liquids and gases.

6. Spread of harmful gases in the atmosphere - dispersion dispersion models, CFD.

7. Character of fire in enclosed and open spaces, thermal characteristics in case of fire.

8. Sources of ignition, prevention and fire and explosion protection in chemical processes.

9. Danger and prevention of heating / cooling in chemical reactors, exothermic processes (absorption, adsorption, nitration, chlorination), pressure systems.

10. Fire detectors and gas sensors: distribution, basic principles, using.

11. Toxic substances and effects on humans.

12. Safety and health at work.

13. Individual projects: causes and consequences of industrial accidents.

Course completion requirements -

Elaboration of individual project on a given topic security.
