Annotation -
The subject is concerned with classification of polymers and additives. It starts with definitions of basic terms e.g. polymers, raw materials, additives, polymeric compounds. It focuses on elastomers, raw and vulcanized rubbers, thermoplastics and thermosets, followed by standard additives, i.e. processing aids, antidegradants, crosslinking agents, additives influencing other physical properties. Special additives inducing specific properties of polymeric materials are also discussed.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

orient themselves in basic terms regarding polymeric materials

orient themselves in basic types of commercially processed thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers and specify their properties

design polymeric material suitable for particular application

specify individual kinds of additives to polymers, purpose of their use and name their examples
