The course introduces students to the basics of conservation, restoration and preventive conservation for archival and library collections. The student is familiar with the physico-chemical properties, methods of production, mechanisms of damage, methods of conservation and restoration of materials of archival collections(paper, leather, parchment, wax, photographic materials). The course includes the basics of preventive conservation for these collections climatic conditions of storage, materials suitable for long-term storage, disaster planning, construction of purpose-built archive buildings).

1. History of conservation and restoration of archive and library collections in the Czech Republic.

2. Basic chemistry of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.

3. A Brief History of paper.

4. Manufacture of pulp (delignification processes)

5. Hand and machine manufacturing paper.

6. Mechanical, chemical and optical properties of paper and methods for determining.

7. Mechanisms of damage to paper (hydrolysis, oxidation, photolysis and photo-oxidation, networking.)

8. Methods for preserving paper (disinfection, cleaning, de-acidification, reinforcing).

9. Production, properties, mechanisms of damage and preserving detention of leather and vellum and parchment documents.

10.Functions, history and materials and seals, bulls, methods of conservation, restoration ethics.

11.Overview of recording media - iron-gall inks, modern recording media,damage mechanisms and conservation.
