Annotation -
The subject is focused on working with chemical literature, and library, citation and chemical databases. Attention is paid to preparation of a scientific publication and citation rules. Student can test acquired abilities during seminars and individual projects.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Search scientific literature and patents in library and professional databases.

Search toxicological, structural and physico-chemical information on chemical substances.

Prepare simple scientific publication, correctly cite references and use citation managers.

They will also understand the principles of publishing and rating of scientific journals and scientometry.

1. Chemical literature, types of information sources, primary sources, selected journals covering chemistry, environmental technology and power engineering

2. Literature search iterative and retrospective approaches to search in scientific literature, assignment of individual projects

3. Library information systems, union catalogues of books and journals

4. Access to full texts of articles and books from various publishers

5. Chemical Abstracts - printed form, history of processing of primary information sources

6. CA on CD, indexes, other services of Ultranet

7. Access to CA through SciFinder application

8. Citation, importance for evaluation of publication, scientist (sum of citations, auto citations, h-index) and for literature search, Science Citation Index and Scopus databases

9. Evaluation of journal quality - Impact Factor, basics of journal editing

10. Toxicological databases MSDS, toxicity labeling systems in EU and USA

11. Searching scientific information on the internet

12. Preparation of scientific publication (article, thesis)
