Annotation -
The course focuses on understanding biological processes and their applications in unit operations of biotechnological production. It is based on a quantitative description of formation, preservation and transformation of energy in cells during cell growth and product formation. Building on the knowledge of Bioengineering I, the course develops deeper understanding of the relationships between processes, and the ability to select the appropriate types of equipment and carry out their design into a production line.

Students will be able to:

Analyze and optimize cultivation processes in the biotechnology industry.

Evaluate the quantity of heat released during cell cultivation.

Design a suitable production process and select machinery for production lines.

1. Formation and transfer of energy in cell - basic principles

2. Coupling of reactions and reaction systems. Maintenance energy and endogenous metabolism.

3. Differences in cell energetics in terms of transport pathway, and the final electron acceptor

4. Transformation, transduction, and energy conservation in cell and product formation.

5. Energy coupling during cell growth and product formation.

6. Regulating of sub-metabolic systems.

7. Heat generation during microbial process. Heat balance of bioreactor.

8. Bioreactors with mechanical agitation - types, models and applications.

9. Bioreactors with pneumatic and hydraulic agitation - types, models and applications.

10. Special bioreactors for cultivation of microbial, plant, and tissue cells.

11. Measurement and control of bioreactors. Design elements.

12. Preparatory operations and equipment in biotechnolology.

13. Downstream operations and equipment in biotechnolology

14. Special processes, equipment and their practical applications. Examples of biotechnological production.
