The course is an introduction to the study of natural compounds with their most important representatives. For each group it introduces its nomenclature and occurence in natural material and in detail discusses synthetic steps leading to their preparation. It also discusses practical industry applications of individual groups of natural compounds.

Classify natural compounds into individual groups of natural compounds

Name natural compounds according to nomenclature

Identify sources of natural compounds suitable for laboratory or industrial application

Design synthetic routes for required groups of natural compounds

Give basic overview of individual groups applications

2. Occurrence and role of saccharides in nature

3. Nomenclature of saccharides, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides

4. Protecting groups strategy, principal of orthogonality

5. Synthesis of amino, thio, fluor and deoxy derivatives of saccharides and their biological activity and role in nature

6. Steroids, their nomenclature, natural occurrence, and possibilities of synthetic application

7. Terpenes and oligopeptides in nature and regulation of biological processes. Synthetic application, synthesis of peptide libraries

8. Natural glycosides and small conjugates with steroid, terpenic, and flavonoid aglycone, occurrence, role, and synthetic routes to their synthesis

9. Polysaccharides of plant or animal origin

10. Glyco proteins, glycol lipids, glycose amino glycans

11. Sugars as components of nucleic acids, their synthetic application. Nomenclature of nucleosides and nucleotides
