Annotation -
The semestral work I of the specialization analytical chemistry is focused on the understanding and interpretation of a combination of mass, vibrational and 1D and 2D NMR-spectra. Students have to determine the molecular structure of several substances interpreting the spectral data. The results of the project are presented both in the written form and as an oral contribution at a specialized seminar.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Interpret vibrational, mass and NMR spectra of organic compounds and considering mutual relationships to describe molecular structure of substances.

Present the spectral interpretation results and to discuss plausible explanations of observed spectral features.

Syllabus -

In the first stage the students are introduced to software tools and literature for interpretation of vibrational, NMR and mass spectra. Afterwards they obtain a combination of vibrational, mass and 1D and 2D NMR spectra of unkknown substances. They consult the interpretation of spectra with teachers individually. The results are summarized in the form of a written protocol and a computer presentation to be presented as an oral contribution on a seminar. The seminar is attended by all student and teachers to discuss thoroughly individual spectra and to stress out relationships among both individual spectroscopic techniques and sample structures.
