Annotation -
The subject brings a survey of chemistry development from antiquity to the modern age. Topics cover, e.g., history of theoretical approaches to matter transformation including beginnings of the atom theory, ancient chemical technologies, alchemic opinions and procedures and their heritage for the modern chemistry, the chemical revolution in the 18th century, development of a chemical nomenclature and periodization of elements, all with the emphasis on significance of chemistry for the mankind advancement.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to

be versed in historical development of theories of the nature of matter and its transformation, ancient and medieval technologies of important products (metals, pottery, glass, remedies, cementitious materials etc.), alchemy and its heritage for the present-day chemistry, and history and development of contemporary chemical technologies.

1. History of teaching of chemistry. History of ICT.

2. Importance of chemistry and its role in history of mankind. Fire.

3. Antiquity. Pottery, lime binders, concrete, metals.

4. Antiquity. Glass, glaze, pigments. Food conservation. Other technologies (leather tanning, textiles dyeing, drugs, cosmetics).

5. Principles of alchemic views - lapis philosophorum, aqua vitae. Hellenistic period.

6. Arabian alchemy. Mercury-sulfur theory. European alchemy. Alchemic symbolism.

7. Alchemic instruments. Alchemic nomenclature. Heritage of alchemy.

8. Transition period. Iatrochemistry. Pneumatic chemistry. Phlogiston theory.

9. Origins of modern chemistry - The Chemical Revolution. Lavoisier.

10. Quantitative chemical laws. Stoichiometry. Dalton's atomic theory.

11. Development of theoretical views in organic chemistry.

12. Periodization of elements. Periodic law. Periodic table.

13. Development of chemical nomenclature. Berzelius' logograms. Development of Czech nomenclature.

14. History of applied chemistry. History of manufacture of sulfuric acid, alkalies and other industrial chemicals.
