Social Psychology course introduces important social psychological knowledge that is relevant for teaching practice and for people who work with children and youngsters in schools. Aim of the course is to give an overview of selected important issues in social psychological research and knowledge and show the way this knowledge influences current pedagogical practice.

Social psychology course 1. Introductory part: A brief look into the history of social psychology, research methods in social psychology, socio-psychological experiment as a key method to do research in social psychology. . 2. People in the social context: Social reality as a key social-psychological concept. Relevance of the knowledge from developmental psychology. Relationship between cultural and social psychology. 3. Attitudes: Attitudes as a concept; attitudes in everyday life and in teaching practice; characteristics and components of attitudes; internal consistency of attitudes; causes of discrepancies between attitudes and behavior; measuring attitudes - a demonstration of projective techniques and rating scales and their use in school practice. The problem of attitude change - cognitive dissonance, balance theory, persuasion, psychological reactance, the effect of a double reward. 4. Pro-social behavior: Definition and examples of pro-social behavior; reasons for pro-social behavior - social change, social norms, empathy, the theory of equitable world; motivating pro-social behavior, pro-social behavior in crisis situations - bystander effect, shifted responsibility; pedagogical applications topic 5. Anti-social behavior :Terminology - aggression, aggression, hostility, violence, aggression types. Aggression: theoretical concepts explaining the origin of aggressive behavior, mass media and aggression, group aggression. Implications for teaching practice: antisocial behavior in childhood and adolescence, behavioral disorders and their causes; bullying. 6. Social cognition:The concept of social cognition, basic components of social cognition; schema types: self diagram, people, events diagram, schematics roles. Attribution - attributional accuracy and errors, Kelly´s theory of attribution, attributional style and personality, social perception - forming impressions of people and biases in forming impressions. Application into educational context. 7. Social influence:The presence of others and its influence on our behavior. Social inhibition, social facilitation, social idleness; Compliance, conformity, obedience to authority (important research: Milgram experiments, so called Lucifer effect -Zimbardo). 8. Social groups and group dynamics: Definition of social group; types of groups, the influence of social groups onto individuals: Mass crowd behavior. The influence of small social groups onto individuals - conformity (Asch and Scheriff) .Compliance and its techniques. Dynamics of small social groups - cooperation and competition. The structure of social groups . 9. School class as a social group: Specificity of school class as a social group. Roles in school class, the structure and dynamics in school class.
