Students will understand the problematics of microorganisms causing various diseases, as well as the mechanisms of their actions on humans. They will be able to distinguish between the representatives of human microbiome and pathogenic microorganisms. They will also know and be able to describe the diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, to identify these microorganisms and propose the approaches to their elimination. Students will understand not only the mechanisms of action of toxins of selected microorganisms and their pathogenesis in general, but also the actions of antimicrobial agents and emerging resistance. They will also understand the vaccination problematics. |

First part of the course will be focused on human microbiome and its role in human health. Then the lectures will proceed with the topics on common principles of pathogenicity and virulence of microorganisms. Tropism and collonization of the host. Toxins, toxoids. Vaccination. Antibiotics, antivirotics, antifungals, chemotherapeutics, principles of micoorganisms resistance. The main part of our course will be focused on the pathogenicity of following microorganisms: Spirochetes, Gram-positive cocci, Gram-negative cocci and coccobacilli, Gram-positive non-spore forming and sporulating aerobic rods, anaerobic bacteria, non Gram-staining bacteria, Mollicutes, Chlamydia, non spore-forming aerobic bacteria, Gram-positive aerobic spore-forming rods, aerobic gram-negative rods, facultative anaerobic gram-negative rods, Gram-negative aerobic to microaerophilic rods, Rickettsia, fungi, protozoa, viruses - DNA and RNA viruses, viroids, virophages, prions. Finally, we will describe the principles of modern methods of the detection of pathogenic microorganisms.
