The course deals with the theoretical principles and practical engineering methodologies associated with the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. During the course the subject of soil and water pollution will be introduced from a wide range of sources and the mobility of contaminant constituents in the subsurface will be examined. Different remediation technologies and strategies to overcome the pollution are covered. The course provides practical, technically sound guidelines on how to select the right technology for a particular site, as well as how to properly design, install, and monitor that technology to meet site closure requirements.

1) Introduction - Potential hazards to human health and the environment. Planning and legislative issues in land-use change and redevelopment.

2) Risk assessment: source-pathway-receptor concept; estimation, evaluation and control of risk.

3) Site investigation: preliminary, exploratory, detailed and monitoring.

4) Hydrogeology of site: trial pits, drilling, coring, sampling and pumping tests.

5) Fate of the contaminants in the subsurface: advection, dispersion, diffusion and chemical transformation.

6) Soil and water pollution – environmental metals and metalloids.

7) Soil and water pollution – pesticides and related materials.

8) On-site and off-site remediation technologies for unsaturated zone: soil vapor extraction and soil flushing, stabilization, thermal, physical, and chemical methods.

9) Conventional on-site remediation technologies for saturated zone: Air sparging, permeable barriers, pump and treat.
