Annotation -
The subject focuses on improving and expanding language and communication skills in general English, interpretation of texts and listening materials, presentation of students' opinions and their ability to reason. Topics include music, sleep, argument, crime and punishment, advertising, science. The final level of proficiency is B2/B2+ according to CERF (Common European Reference Framework).

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

  • understand and interpret authentic texts (newspaper articles, extracts from literature) and listening materials
  • make arguments in a discussion using all acquired language skills, explain opinions and attitudes
  • use suitable and precise vocabulary
  • write an essay
  • write a report

1. Night night; "Used to, be used to, get used to"; Sleep.

2. Music to my ears; Gerunds and infinitives; Music.

3. Let's not argue; Past modals, "would rather"; Verbs often confused.

4. Arguing "for and against".

5. It's all an act; Verbs of the senses; The body; Writing a description.

6. Cutting crime; Passive voice, "have sth. done, it's said that..., he is thought to"; Crime and punishment.

7. Expressing your opinion; Writing an essay.

8. Fake news; Reporting verbs; The media. Word stress.

9. Good business? Clauses of contrast and purpose; Advertising, business.

10. Super cities; Uncountable and plural nouns; Word building: prefixes and suffixes.

11. Discussion, giving reasons; Writing a report.

12. Science fact, science fiction; Quantifiers: "all, every, both, etc."; Science.

13. Free speech; Articles; Collocation: word pairs. Pausing and sentence stress.

14. General revision - grammar, vocabulary.
