Annotation -
Wastes represent a significant worldwide problem. The aim of the subject is to present methods of processing and utilization of different types of waste. Technologies having potential of reducing amount of waste which has been landfilled as well as technologies maximizing recovery of valuable components from waste will be discussed in detail.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Be knowledgeable in various waste categories and types.

Decide which recycling method could be applicable for processing of chosen waste (metal, polymer, glass and ceramics, WEEE).

Have overview of legislation concerning waste issues.

Syllabus -

1.Introduction - wastes in general. Metal waste and its utilization for metal production.

2.Basic pyro- and hydrometallurgical operations used for processing of metal waste.

3.Processing of steel scrap, waste containing Pb, used cemented carbide.

4.Processing of metal-bearing waste containing Al, Cu, Zn.

5.Processing of consumer's waste - machinery units, car wrecks, metal package, fridges, washing machines.

6.Special metal-bearing waste and possibilities of its processing.

7.Origin and classification of polymer waste, legislation, eco-balance.

8.Polymer waste and its utilization. Classification and separation of polymer materials, physical and chemical recycling, energetic utilization of polymers, ecological aspects.

9.Rubber waste and its utilization. Material utilization, rubber recovery, energetic utilization.

10.Utilization of inorganic waste for production of construction materials 1 - slags, fly ash, flue dust.

11.Utilization of inorganic waste for production of construction materials 2 - products of desulfurizing processes.

12.Waste utilization in production of concrete, glass and ceramics.

13.Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) - special category of waste (legislation and practice).

14.Utilization of household WEEE (TV, light sources, mobile phones).
