Annotation -
The course focuses on understanding and quantitative description of biological processes in the context of their implementation under defined conditions enabling to achieve reproducibility of results. The syllabus is based on the principles of kinetics, balancing as well as measurement and regulation of biological processes, including the design of the equipment.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Understand the biological, chemical and engineering processes in the biotechnology industry

Describe and evaluate basic biocatalytic processes.

Quantitatively evaluate experimental data of processes catalyzed by biological elements and to carry out heat and mass balances of biotechnological processes.

Design mixing and aeration equipment of bioreactors.

3. Bioreactors - characteristics and types, methods of cultivation

4. Mixing in bioreactors - theory, power consumption, homogenization, shear stress

5. Hydrodynamic flow characteristics - retention time distribution, models of flow

6. Mass transfer - oxygen transfer, aeration methods, measurement and quantification, KLa

7. Heat transfer, heat balance of bioreactor, sterilization, cooling and heating

8. Engineering kinetics of chemical and enzymatic reactions

9. Kinetics of cell growth - mass balance, yield, metabolic quotient, inhibition, productivity

10. Cell culture methods - batch and fed batch cultivation

11. Cell culture methods - continuous culture

12. Scale-up and scale-down of bioprocesses

13. Measurement, control and modeling of biological processes

14. Design and construction of bioreactors, SIP and CIP systems
